The seeds of Brodart Co. began in 1939 when a Columbia University student named Arthur Brody invented the plastic book jacket cover. This innovation, in turn, gave birth to Brodart Co.
Over the years, books and other circulation material, supplies, furniture and a variety of services have been added to the company's offerings.

McNaughton Books
The concept of leasing books to libraries actually began as a rental program through drugstores over 50 years ago. Rates were a nickel a day, divided by the shopkeeper and Nelson McNaughton, the company owner. All his books were covered by Brodart jackets to protect them. And so began an association that would persist for decades.
But it was the serendipity of bankruptcy by a retailer that brought Brodart and McNaughton closer, provoking the combination that has grown ever since.
