Opening Day Services

Selecting titles for an opening day collection in partnership with a public library is a complex task. There are many different ways to approach such projects and the manner a library prefers influences the results in many ways. However, there are three basic approaches, each with its own variables:

Brodart-supplied selection lists and local selection

Collection replication by Brodart

Brodart Vendor Selection

When we provide selection lists, they may be based on a wide variety of factors a library specifies. Most of the important factors are described below. However, the central issue is the extent of local decision-making and the degree to which Brodart provides judgment. In the case of Brodart-supplied selection lists, a local library makes final selection choices from our lists. Collection replication involves a greater degree of our intervention in the process. Vendor selection is the collection development process that is completely or almost completely outsourced, relying to a great extent on Brodart librarians' judgment.

The Process

Profile - All opening day collections begin with a profiling process of community description, collection goals, list requirements, budgets, and target volumes.

Planning & Scheduling - After the library completes the profile, we have meetings or conference calls to discuss the profile, the requirements, and the schedule.

Local Selection - Then we begin the production of the selection lists, systematically working through the entire collection. If the library staff is selecting, the lists are sent to them in paper or electronic format (which can include Bibz.com).

Brodart Selection - If we are selecting, those lists go to our selectors with your profile and instructions on target volumes for each category, and you may exercise the option of reviewing our work and making modifications.

Costs - There are typically no additional charges for selection lists to be used by library staff. Charges for vendor selection vary based on the "degree of difficulty." These charges can either be handled through a flat fee for services on a separate invoice or through a per book charge added to your cataloging and processing fee. All this would be negotiable based on your requirements and overall plan for your projects.

The Benefits of Outsourcing O.D.C.s

Opening day collections can be very time-consuming, especially for an already busy staff. Keeping up with the daily needs of an existing library while simultaneously assembling a new one can tax library resources to a painful extent. So enlisting Brodart to either produce customized selection lists and/or to perform actual selection can save the day.

Library Commitment
For the best results, a library must commit itself to communicating policies, practices, desires, and needs very clearly for both adult and juvenile materials. The better Brodart's understanding of your particular approach and needs, the better the results will be. In addition, though a library will spend less time in actual selection, there is an investment in managing the project, evaluating and giving feedback to us. Those two investments of time and effort from a library will assure an excellent, on-time and on-budget collection.

The Benefits of Development Assistance
Development assistance involves Brodart providing custom-tailored selection lists from which a library makes purchasing choices. In the process of creating these lists Brodart applies its professional knowledge, data and collection development tools to deliver the following:

Up-to-date availability information

Popularity and quality assessments

Comparisons with a library's current holdings

Lists in tune with a particular community's needs

Lists in that follow a library's collection philosophies

A systematic coverage of an entire collection

Supplemental lists for new titles and specific areas

Careful budgeting, scheduling, fund accounting and reporting

The local library maintains control of (and assumes responsibility for) final selection decisions (both titles and quantities).

The Benefits of Brodart Selection
In addition to the benefits of our assistance, described above, our selection services deliver the following:

Brodart's professional librarians' tools and expertise choose titles

The library's staff time is used most efficiently
