Nerissa Moran

Nerissa Moran always found books to be a comfort and an inspiration as she grew up, and public libraries were a big part of her life. She felt as if it was a natural occurrence for her to want to work with books after having studied literature in college and discovering how important it was for her. She founded Bookworks in San Francisco's Mission District after importing books for the San Francisco State University Bookstore over a period of two years.

The Mission District was in need of original Spanish language literature and Nerissa partnered with the local library to bring in books from Mexico starting in 1980. While still at Bookworks, she had begun meeting with other booksellers at ABA who were also interested in Spanish language materials. While helping ABA to get started with their own collections, Books on Wings was created to import and distribute those books in Spanish to culturally diversified communities that were in need of such service. It was during this period that Nerissa started travelling to international book fairs, with Guadalajara's Feria Internacional del Libro her first destination in its very first year of existence.

During a period of more than 20 years, while running Books on Wings, Nerissa also established a bookstore, La Casa del Libro, where she began one of San Francisco's first reading circles in Spanish, and hosted many prominent Latin American authors including Eduardo Galeano. She attended dozens of book fairs in Mexico, Spain and Argentina, has spoken on numerous panels, written literary reviews of books in Spanish for a local San Francisco newspaper and still has found time to raise two children and be active in the community and school system. She is fluent in Spanish and, while we think of bi-cultural people as coming from other countries and adapting some American culture while living here, Nerissa is one of those who have gone the other way and brought much of the Latin American culture into her own life.

Laura Bejarano

Born and raised in Mexico City, Laura Bejarano has been a lover of Spanish language literature since her early years. After studying Education in Mexico City Laura decided that her career had only one direction, and it was to work with original Spanish language literature, her real passion. Since she was a child Laura was in love with books. She knew that literature was more than only a passion. Literature was in fact a part of her. With such clarity in her future career goals, Laura's opportunity to work serving librarians in the United States was a natural occurrence.

It was over 10 years ago when Nerissa Morán, owner of former Books on Wings of San Francisco offered Laura the opportunity to prove her talent and knowledge of Hispanic literature and culture by offering her an opportunity to work with Books on Wings.

It didn't take long for Laura to start developing strong relationships with several librarians in The United States and to learn about the needs of Hispanic communities that stretched from Miami to Seattle. Naturally, Laura started building entire collections for many American libraries in no time at all. She was doing what she loved the most!

Laura's next step was to develop strong and profitable relationships with publishers of Spanish language books. For the past 10 years Laura has incessantly traveled to most international books fairs, including Guadalajara in Mexico, Havana in Cuba, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Santiago in Chile, Bogotá in Colombia, San José, in Costa Rica, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain and last but no least, Frankfurt in Germany. Amazingly, Laura hasn't missed one single event of the above list in the last 10 years! Laura's commitment to building the best and most unique lists speak for itself.

Between her work travels, Laura still found time to consolidate shipments from a number of publisher houses overseas, effectively saving respectable sums of customer's money in shipping charges. Also, every other month Laura travels to Mexico City to see what the publisher's latest releases, network with publishers and to manage shipping consolidations and payments on invoices.

Laura also found time to form "El Circulo de Lectura de la Comunidad" (Community Reader's Circle) in the heart of San Francisco's Latino Mission District, which still meets today and has hosted a number of internationally acclaimed Latin American authors.

Houtan Zarganjfard

Houtan Zarganjfard found out he loved learning various languages while attending Azad University in the Iranian capital, Tehran. There, Houtan obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, when he graduated with honors in 1997.

While still a student in Tehran in 1995, Houtan started working as a tour guide, focusing on tourists from Madrid and Barcelona and spent the next five years of his life handling more than seventy groups of Spanish tourists. It was a great way for Houtan to keep his Spanish language skills. Houtan also obtained a certification of Technical Management of Tour and Travel Agencies and managed a travel agency for an entire year before immigrating to the United States. After coming to The United States Houtan and his wife decided to settle down in Houston, Texas.

Very interested in libraries, Houtan had the opportunity to visit was one of the branches of the Harris County Public Library system in Texas. During his first visit he was very impressed by the organization of information provided by the library's technical services group who worked behind the scenes. Such organization was Houtan's motivation to enroll in the Master's program of Library Science at Texas Woman's University (TWU). Houtan's plan was to be able to become part of an organized information system where he could use his knowledge of Spanish, English and Persian. According to Houtan he worked in one of the best County Public Libraries while studying at TWU.

Brodart welcomes Houtan as a Spanish Resources Cataloging Librarian knowing that his leadership and skills will be key in maintaining Brodart's leading excellence in cataloging all original Spanish language titles.
