Normalization
Normalization is a broad term used to describe the process of translating inconsistent data into a standardized form. Libraries send us copies of their data which we normalize to their specifications and return a corrected file.

This process is especially important when a library is changing ILS vendors or is involved in a union catalog project.

Normalization Programs

General Material Designation Normalization (GMD) (245$h) - Corrects variations (including abbreviations and misspellings) per AACR2 specifications (e.g., video recording, Videorecording, VCR, and VHS to videorecording)

Edition Normalization (250$a) - Corrects variations per AACR2 specifications (e.g., First edition to 1st ed.)

Publisher Normalization (260$b) - Converts variant forms to one standardized form (e.g., Alfred A. Knopf to A. A. Knopf).

Author Normalization (1xx$d) - Adds closing dates to specified author entries.

Leading Indicators - Corrects filing indicators for leading articles "An" and "The." (For sorting and lookup.)

Custom design your own "normalization" program and Brodart can translate any data on a file that can be identified by MARC tag, subfield and content to a new, specified form.
