Brodart's customized cataloging is convenient and flexible. Our skilled and dedicated team will provide you with professional service to ensure that your library's detailed specifications are followed. Our catalogers can help you meet schedules, manage staff shortages and prioritize your workflow.

Customized Cataloging

Brodart maintains an enormous database of full level bibliographic records originally cataloged with material in hand. These records follow AACR2 and LCRI rules. Our Customized Cataloging alters these records to suit the specific needs of your library by applying both programmatic and manual changes to the records we deliver to you.

Customized cataloging guarantees full level records for any item we provide, regardless of whether the record exists in our database. In other words, we catalog new material for you whenever original, material-in-hand cataloging is required to enhance or upgrade an existing record. When no record exists, we create one from scratch. We follow your non-standard / local practices, including authority control. What's more, we work with your library to complete or upgrade records. Of course, we enhance records as necessary to add non-standard content. Customized Cataloging includes:

Opening Day Collections & New School Openings

For opening day collections, customized cataloging is a life saver for the library staff. Brodart does the time-consuming tasks of cataloging and preparing the books and audiovisual materials for shelving so the library staff is free to attend to other important activities.

Ongoing Needs

To meet ongoing needs, Brodart customized cataloging is perfect for those libraries under time and resource constraints. By receiving materials circulation-ready and shelf-ready, the library saves time. Since the customized cataloging and shelf-preparation are completed at Brodart, new acquisitions lessen the strain on the library's technical services personnel.

Material-in-Hand Cataloging

With material in hand, our catalogers will search your library's MARC database to determine if the item is to be processed as an added copy or if new cataloging is required. When a possible match is found, the record is verified against the material in hand. The library's existing MARC record is then used to print labels and to complete the specified item level processing. When new cataloging is required, our catalogers will review, modify and upgrade a Library of Congress record or provide original MARC cataloging. Cataloging records comply with MARC and ISBD standards, and follow AACR2 and LCRI.

Brodart customized cataloging can provide MARC records with holdings in batch or online. For batch processing, the library's own database can be loaded into Brodart's bibliographic utility and used as the primary resource for cataloging. For on-line cataloging, Brodart can use the library's cataloging utility to import new bibliographic records and create holding records. If your library is an OCLC member, our catalogers can access OCLC on your behalf using your library symbol and authorization through a third party agreement.

AV & Publisher Direct Purchases

Brodart offers cataloging and shelf-ready processing for books and audiovisual materials purchased from us. In addition, we can catalog and process your library's backlog materials or publisher direct purchases that cannot be supplied by Brodart. Physical processing will be completed following the specification of the library and shelf-ready materials will be shipped or stored based on the library's preferred schedule.

Full Support

A dedicated management team will assist you in evaluating your needs and defining your specifications. Your team will consist of an experienced automation specialist, a cataloging service librarian holding an ALA-accredited MLS degree, and a personal project manager.

With our project management reports, you can rely on Brodart to keep you informed of your account status. These reports will specifically help monitor purchases, funding, cancellations, and invoicing.
