Collection Builder
The Collection Builder program provides selection lists based on criteria defined by a library to fulfill its specific needs. These customized lists cover all age levels and subject areas and can be tightly focused or cover an entire collection. They can include retrospective and/or current titles, and can be based on authoritative recommendation and/or popularity. The highly targeted focus of these lists make them ideal for building specific areas of a collection, coordinating replacement ordering or planning an opening day collection.

In a Nutshell

The Collection Builder program is designed for collection enhancement (not new title previews as in TIPS). It is not a subscription that is delivered periodically, but is a one-time analysis of a collection that produces a list in response to that collection. As a result of the purpose of these lists, titles that have previously appeared on earlier Collection Builder lists aren't blocked from appearing on future ones. Collection Builders are free.

Collection Builder will save staff time and streamline the selection process. In a single list you can view both comprehensive selection and ordering information. Collection Builder lists are provided in shelf order so you can identify and evaluate available titles more efficiently.

Highly Recommended Titles

In order to identify high-quality material for potential inclusion on a customized Collection Builder list, Brodart aggregates selections of premium material from many sources. That is, we assemble awards, honors and selections by highly reputable critics and selectors. Over 700 such sources of selections are currently in use, updated constantly. Over 80,000 titles are included on these lists. You can rely on the many authoritative sources who identified these works as valuable to point out material you should consider. The following are just a few of the award lists we include:

Best Books for Young Adults
Caldecott Award and Honor Books
Children's Catalog
Coretta Scott King Award and Honor Books
Fifty Years of Notable Books
Genreflecting
Middle and Junior High School Library Catalog
Newbery Award and Honor Books
Outstanding Books for the College Bound
Public Library Catalog
Quick Picks
Science & Technology: A Purchase Guide

(To examine our third-party lists and a few of our own selections, click here.)

At the same time, we note whether a title has been reviewed by a trusted source of critical advice. Just as an honor or award qualifies a title for consideration, a review may also be required to identify important work and to judge value. The following review sources are available to Brodart customers:

Book Links
Booklist
BookPage
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
Criticas
Horn Book
Kirkus Reviews
KLIATT
Library Journal
Library Media Connection
Library Talk
New York Times Book Review
Publishers Weekly
School Library Journal
Science Books and Films
VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates)

Brodart Lists

We add to the power of third-party selection and reviews by adding our own lists to those collected elsewhere. Brodart's Collection Development professionals maintain lists of the library world's bestsellers, classics, best poetry, drama and reference material. There are, literally, scores of such selections that are used by Collection Builder to provide the best, most robust choices for your needs.

You can instruct Collection Builder to search material only from the recommended titles in our "target" lists or you can search all 2.6 million titles in Brodart's database. In either case, you further define your needs by specifying precisely what sort of material you'd like selected from the sources in question.

Criteria for Selection

Since Collection Builder identifies quality work, the process of creating a selection list from these potential selections depends on further specific criteria. You specify the following in order to further focus the list of titles you wish to consider:

Subject area(s)
Classification range(s)
Age level(s)
Series
Publisher(s)
Approximate number of titles (or budget for project)
Binds and media
Publication date range (if any)
Popularity (Brodart demand levels)

Titles that are located in "targets" you specify, meeting criteria you dictate, are listed including all of the following information:

Bind preference
Classification
Author, Illustrator
Biography
Descriptor (e.g., reference, picture book, easy reader)
Media (e.g., large type, mass market, board book)
Brodart's Title Identification Number (TIN)
ISBN
Publisher
Publication month and year
Status
Age range
Price
Sources that include the title
Two review citations

Holdings

Collection Builder will compare the results of its work to a library's holdings so that titles don't appear on a Collection Builder list that are currently held by you. Alternately, titles in your holdings can be listed but specifically identified as in your collection already.

Other "blocking" of titles is also possible. Any list of materials can be excluded from appearing on a selection list. You simply designate these as excluded and they don't show up on the new Collection Builder list. This can be done globally, so that the exclusion is across all lists produced for that account, or on a list-by-list basis.

Delivery

Collection Builder lists are posted to a BIBZ user's web application so that they can be reviewed, saved, shared and edited. Of course, they can also be used as an order form, quickly and conveniently turning an edited and approved list into an order for desired material. Collection Builder lists are also available in printed form.

Finally, Collection Builder lists are run on demand, whenever needed by a library. They are one-time productions and can be delivered to include either basic title information - including annotations or full TIPS format information. That is, like a TIPS list, Collection Builders can include full-text reviews (when available) of titles included on the list.
