Collection Analysis
Collection Analysis is commonly performed on school library collections but isn't limited to them. The process can be critical to supporting a school district's collection development policy. It provides a snapshot of an existing collection and compares what "is" to what "ought to be." In a world of tighter operating budgets and expanding content opportunities, it's more important than ever to understand the realities of your collections.

Collection analysis allows a library to:

Determine strengths and weaknesses of its collection.
Gain new funding for library materials.
Plan to reach future collection development goals.

The Process

Collection analysis proceeds straightforwardly in four simple steps:

Base the analysis on current library holdings
Analyze the collection based on age and classification
Determine where the need to adjust the collection lies
Create a list of books recommended to balance the collection

Library Holdings Data

The use of library-specific holdings information is an integral part of the collection analysis. The library provides a copy of its database with both bibliographic records and item records in MARC formatted file that includes the following data: ISBN / ISSN, LCCN, local Dewey Classification, Date of publication / Copyright, local tags and collection codes.

Brodart prefers to receive files via FTP, but can accept 4 mm tape, or CDs. Of course, Brodart will assist in gathering the information required to perform your collection analysis.

Collection Analysis Reporting

Brodart provides a number of detailed, customized reports to assist a library with collection analysis. These reports display the data in bar, table, and pie graphs.

The analysis is be based on:

Dewey 100's
General Fiction
Biography
Easy

The analysis will provide the following information:

Age of collection and the proportions of the collection at various ages
Age of collection by classification and their proportions to the whole

Collection Comparison Reporting

Brodart provides reports comparing your collection to recommended percentages for the areas analyzed. The percentages are based on those recommended by AASL (the American Association of School Librarians) and by 65 years of professional experience serving school libraries. These detailed, custom reports reveal specific strengths and needs in your school library collection. (Note that there are currently no recognized standards for public libraries.)

Collection Builder Selection Lists

Based on the results of the analysis, Brodart will recommend enhancements and changes in your collection. A Collection Builder selection will be created to map your future collection. Over 700 recommended bibliographies, review journals, and other standard sources have been identified and indexed in our dynamic title database. This extensive resource enables us to produce selection lists for a wide range of retrospective collection development needs, such as collection building to fill gaps identified through collection analysis.
