Barcodes
Barcodes are optically scanned printed labels that are attached to library materials to identify them. They link an item (books, DVD, VHS or audio Cassettes) to a bibliographic record. Some libraries will also link the barcode to patron or student information, which will allow tracking of items on loan and the analysis of titles and genres. Brodart adapts to barcode placement in the same way it does other labels: to a library's exact specifications.

Usually, Brodart affixes the barcode to a book and includes its identifying number in a bibliographic record. Barcodes for this process can be supplied by a library or a range can be specified by a customer, and Brodart will supply the labels. In some instances, Brodart affixes a barcode to a book without linking it to a bibliographic record. This linking is performed by the library upon receipt of the material. Such unlinked barcodes are referred to by the industry as "dumb barcodes." ("Smart" barcodes are those where Brodart includes the barcode number on the record.)

Barcodes can be merely scannable or a two-part label can be applied with an eye-readable strip so that the number can be identifiable.

Smart Barcodes

"Smart barcodes" are those that are linked to a record by Brodart. Brodart supports all accepted symbology conventions for barcodes:

Like other labels, barcodes can be protected. However, because they are optically read, the covering is a C-Vue protector that doesn't inhibit scanning.
