Theft Detection
Traditional theft detection is provided by an electromagnetic strip that is sensed by equipment positioned at the entrances and exits of libraries. (The same technology is used in clothing stores to keep folks from walking off with sweaters.) The tags or strips used in libraries purely for theft detection do not convey information about the book that contains them. Instead, an activated strip simply sounds an alarm if it is detected by a sensor. Customers can supply these strips or Brodart can source them.

Of course, these strips can be de-activated by a checkout librarian with special equipment used for the job. This permits patrons to take books through sensors without setting them off. Virtually all tags and strips used in libraries can be limitlessly activated and de-activated (over and over) so that returned books (or other material) can be protected.

Application
Brodart applies both strips and tags automatically between randomly selected pages. This automatic application is very economical. However, some libraries request that theft detection be inserted in the spine of the book. This can only be done manually and is available with a premium charge.

3M
3M's Tattle-Tape security strips offer easy and discreet protection for all your library materials, including magnetic media (cassettes, CDs and DVDs). Tattle-Tape strips cannot be shielded by briefcases, backpacks, the human body or other common objects. 3M's archival-quality adhesive will not degrade library materials. The Tattle-Tape signal does not degrade over time, so materials are protected for as long as you own them. Tattle-Tape strips can be turned "off" and "on" again repeatedly, yet still retain their original effectiveness. Tattle-Tape strips resensitize to 100% signal strength for the highest level of security, yet they desensitize completely to eliminate false alarms.

Checkpoint
Checkpoint provides two sorts of anti-theft materials. Their traditional, electromagnetic (EM) anti-theft strips and tags set of an alarm when activated and passed through sensors. Checkpoint's inconspicuous EM anti-theft strips can easily be hidden in books, CDs, DVDs, videotapes and audiocassettes. Checkpoint's EM strips can be demagnetized and remagnetized over and over without affecting performance.

Checkpoint also provides RFID tags that can be used as theft detection devices. Checkpoint's RF Security Tag technology is paper-thin and comes in several sizes to accommodate several location options, so the security component is invisible to your patron.
