TIPS is a preview service. It culls upcoming material for libraries to consider. So, it performs a key function essential to the efficient management of new-title selection. TIPS applies a set of specific conditions to upcoming titles, segregating those “types” of materials you want to consider. The many different conditions you can apply are extremely flexible and so permit librarians to create lists for very general or very targeted lists. Each individual set of parameters is known as a TIPS Profile.

Set up separate Profiles for your adult, young adult, children's collections, etc. Your profiles can be "de-duped" so that titles that appear in one Profile can be eliminated from other Profiles.

Custom Profiles
Your custom Profile can identify titles by:

|
|
Age Ranges | Publishers |
|
Series | Authors / Illustrators |
|
Subject Categories | Classification Ranges |
|
Publication Dates | . . . or any combination thereof |
|
Media | |

Most of the characteristics above are obviously important filters. A selection librarian for juvenile materials should consider titles in specific age groups, paying special attention to certain authors and series. Establishing these parameters in a Profile filters out all titles that do not conform to the preferences you set. But TIPS goes further:

Review-Driven
Among the critical characteristics of a book that might make it important for a librarian to consider are reviews. Typically, having been reviewed suggests that the title is significant. What’s more, the review itself can be helpful in making a selection decision. So TIPS is “review driven.” That is, you can request that titles appear on your list only if it has been reviewed by a certain source or sources of criticism.

This makes TIPS the most flexible collection development service available today. New and forthcoming materials can be quickly and efficiently categorized and then considered using the tool. TIPS reduces the time you have to spend on preliminary title identification and research. Plus, it saves countless hours of searching for reviews and manually compiling them.

Since TIPS selection lists are packed with the information you need, it is easy to make smart selection decisions and still have time for other collection development activities.

Selection Lists
There are a considerable number of review sources from which to choose when creating your Profiles. TIPS pre-qualifies titles, building lists of new and recent publications satisfying the parameters you have designated via your TIPS Profile. For example, you can receive a monthly list of all adult nonfiction books reviewed in any of the following: |
 |
| |
Kirkus Reviews | Library Journal |
| |
BookPage | Library Journal Prepub Alert |
| |
Booklist | School Library Journal |
| |
KLIATT | Library Media Connection |
| |
Horn Book | Publishers Weekly |
| |
VOYA | Bulletin for the Center of Children’s Books |
|
Criticas | |
The standard TIPS Profile system filters from these editorial "mentions" and provides you with citations from the reviewing sources. But you can also read the full text reviews of any (or all) of these publications. There is a small, additional monthly charge for this service but it is an enormous convenience and time-saver. Reviews are available immediately on publication. And you can view a complete list and description of them by clicking here.
